who the heck is jeff chalmers?
Thirty-two years in the radio business…and a break in the action.
What started as an emulation of Maple Leaf Gardens P.A. announcer Paul Morris’ announcement of the three stars following Leaf games, turned into the start of Jeff’s radio career. An ‘operator’ job in the mid-70’s at AM powerhouse 680 CFTR led to Jeff’s first on-air gig at 1350 CKAR in Oshawa. It was Q107 in early ‘81…a dream come true…broadcasting from the 30th floor of the Hudson’s Bay Centre at Yonge & Bloor in downtown Toronto. It doesn’t get any better than that. There was also a stint as a technician at CBC Radio, and at AM640 THE HOG. Yes, music on AM in the 90’s! And then, back once again to Q. (six times in total!) Born in Ottawa, it was an easy decision for Jeff to take on the afternoon drive gig at Young Country Y105 in that city. However, after 18 months he found himself returning to Q107. From there it was Y108 in Hamilton for the mid-day shift…and at 6 ½ years, the longest stay in one place before resigning to hook up with 92.5 JACK-FM in Toronto. Jeff signed on as the station’s ‘swing announcer’ before taking over the morning show. He left in September of ’08.
Jeff’s other passion is photography. As the official photographer for Q107, Y108 & 92.5 JACK-FM, Jeff photographed dozens of station events including everything from client parties to large-scale promotions, visiting V.I.P.’s, rock stars and shot staff portraits for seven Corus Entertainment radio stations. In addition to corporate gigs, Jeff has covered sailing events around Lake Ontario including the starts of both the 2009 & 2010 Lake Ontario 300 yacht races. Having recently hooked up with Canadian Yachting magazine, his images are now posted worldwide at www.sail-world.com. In March of 2010, he covered the action in Toronto for Canadian Music Week shooting the hottest bands on the Canadian music scene. Current projects include shooting interiors for GTA-based realtors in addition to his regular schedule of providing live event coverage and portraiture.
