Tale Of The Tape

In 1972 my grade nine home room class was given the task of choosing an album to give away as a prize for a contest that had to do with new students to the school or something to that effect. Entries were submitted and tallied. I forget what I picked, but decision was made. It was to be Black Sabbath’s 1971 release, Masters Of Reality.
My exposure to music had been limited to my parent’s record collection that read like a nerd’s guide to popular music and featured recordings from Peter, Paul & Mary, Trini Lopez and Julie London. I remember thinking, “Who the fuck is Black Sabbath?”
I found out pretty quickly.
Four years later I was working full time in radio and 5 years after that at a major FM rock station in Toronto. By that point, lead singer Ozzy Osbourne had gone solo. Black Sabbath had a new frontman whose name was Ronnie James Dio and I was doing the interview.
Looking at him, he reminded me of my brother’s best friend so I immediately liked him. One of the most charismatic gentleman I’ve ever had the pleasure of speaking with, we talked about Black Sabbath’s current release, “Mob Rules” but ultimately spent more time discussing everyday things than we did about music. He loved footwear. The snakeskin boots he was wearing, he told me, were part of a larger collection that he added to wherever the band travelled.
The guy who’d belted out tunes he’d written with Ritchie Blackmore in Rainbow and was now fronting Sabbath was sitting in this wonderfully intimate cocoon of a studio as close to me as you are to your monitor. I was star struck.
Ronnie James Dio of Black Sabbath. Yeah, I know that band.
